Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program: the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), the mechanism the province uses to nominate candidates for Canadian permanent residence based on Alberta's own labour-market and economic-development priorities. It targets two broad groups: foreign workers already established in Alberta whose skills fill local job shortages in sectors such as tourism, health care, technology, construction, agriculture, and aviation, and entrepreneurs who plan to buy or start a business in the province, including in Alberta's smaller rural communities. AAIP restructured into eight streams in 2026, split between four worker streams and four entrepreneur streams.

Active Alberta streams

• Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) — a base stream (no CRS score, apply directly to Alberta) for foreign workers who are already living and working in Alberta on a valid work permit and hold a full-time, permanent job offer from an Alberta employer; it typically receives the largest share of AAIP's annual nomination allocation.
• Tourism and Hospitality Stream — a base stream for workers already employed full-time in Alberta's tourism and hospitality sector, generally backed by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the employer.
• Rural Renewal Stream (RRS) — a base, community-driven stream: a rural Alberta community must first be designated by the province, and it then endorses candidates (temporary workers or applicants from outside Canada) who have a qualifying job offer to settle and work in that community.
• Alberta Express Entry Stream — Express Entry-aligned: candidates need an existing federal Express Entry profile plus a qualifying Alberta job offer; a provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points. It carries four sector pathways — Dedicated Health Care, Accelerated Tech, Law Enforcement, and General Labour Needs (construction, agriculture, and aviation).
• Rural Entrepreneur Stream — a base stream for entrepreneurs who plan to buy or start a business in a designated rural Alberta community, with minimum net-worth and personal-investment thresholds set by the province.
• Farm Stream — a base stream for experienced farmers who plan to buy or start a farm in Alberta, with minimum farm-management experience and capital requirements.
• Graduate Entrepreneur Stream — a base stream for international students who have graduated from an approved Alberta post-secondary institution and plan to buy or start a business in the province.
• Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream — a base stream for graduates of a non-Canadian post-secondary institution who plan to launch an innovative start-up business in Alberta.
